Summer at Shackleford

These youngsters, Picasso and Phinneas, make their way through the grass flats on the east end of the island.

This filly, Paula, is already a mahogany-colored beauty.

Dino with two of his herd on a grass flat beside Back Sound. The community of Harkers Island can be seen in the background of this picture. Harkers Island, accessible by bridge, is between the mainland and Shackleford Banks. (See the map on the "about the horses" page.) Shackleford Banks is accessible only by boat and is part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore which is managed by the National Park Service.

Family Day at the beach.

Harkers Island provides the backdrop as a mare stops, at Bottle Run Point on the sound side of Shackleford, to snip a bite of spartina grass. Her companion continues around the point toward a water hole.
