Spirit's Page

Several people have asked about the little white horse that lived on Shackleford Banks.

Carolyn Mason tells the story of the Spirit of Shackleford:

With the dignity of an ancient, he wandered at will and foraged for himself. Always shy, but with a touch of curiosity in his beautiful, gentle eyes, he was an orphan … he was our baby.

On January 2, 1997, we found his remains, along with the body of a young mare whose company he had kept since the roundup in November of 1996. His death was the result of human interference; probably well meant, but nonetheless devastating. .

The "Spirit" of Shackleford lives on, and will continue to live on, in the whispers of the sea breeze, in the silver glitter of the moon on the salt water, in the white clouds on the horizon, and in the hearts of all who knew him. His spirit will remain on Shackleford Banks … as long as wild horses roam the island's shores … as long as people care.
